Willingness to be Happy

Willingness to be Happy

Dalai Lama said “The purpose of our lives is to be happy.”

So many times, happiness is misconstrued as pleasure. A lot of people believe chasing pleasure: good food, a new car, parties with friends, full body massages will bring them closer to happiness.

What they are chasing is the most superficial form of satisfaction. The chase never ends as pleasure is never enough. There will always be more stuff to buy and more things to experience.

Pleasure is what is sold to us and we buy it assuming it will make us happy.

The fact is that it does feel good but the feeling is short lived. The chase for pleasure ends up making us more anxious in the long run. As we place our happiness somewhere off in the future and not able to enjoy where we are now. We are always thinking that we are going to be happy when we get to be, do, or have something. So, pleasure is helpful but not sufficient.

A great place to start would be to let go of the ideas that people and things bring us true happiness.

We are responsible for our happiness and we shouldn’t put that responsibility on our relationships. The issue arises when we start feeling someone else is responsible to make us happy. Don’t get me wrong we can definitely experience joy and bliss in our relationships however true happiness emerges through the self.

Once we are awakened to the fact that we are our true source of happiness, all of our relationships become more joyful.

A key ingredient to profound happiness is making progress in life and overcoming challenges that come along the way.

We hear people say happiness is within you, I say happiness happens when you are willing to pursue what’s in you.

Happiness is found in the process of becoming the best version of yourself. It’s a dynamic process and looks different for each of us.
